Our guest preacher was Derek Rees (Swansea/Waunarlwydd).
In the Welsh service he reminded us of Jesus' sufferings in some detail. Jesus was badly mistreated and yet as he suffered the worst kind of treatment from human beings it was in God's will. Through faith in him we are forgiven.
In the English Evening Service: Derek preached on Mary Magdalene. She was healed of demon possession by Jesus and followed him. She was there when he was crucified. He appears to her first after he had been raised from the dead. She tells others that Jesus is alive and has conquered death,
Children's Talk: We discussed the vents of the first Palm Sunday. Jesus rides into to Jerusalem. The crowds cry out: Hosanna, blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD. Jesus may be meek and lowly but he is God's promised king. The king who will suffer for sinners.
Morning Service: Matthew 26:36-46. Just before being betrayed, trial and crucifixion Jesus prays in the Garden of Gethsemane. He knows that ahead of him lies intense suffering. His prayer is that of there is any other way to save sinners that he spared the cross. However there is no other way: God's will is that his son should die.
Evening Service: (Revelation 11:15-19). The Bible declares that Jesus of Nazareth is the Messiah who will reign forever over God's unshakable kingdom. Everything in our world will give way and be replaced by God's everlasting kingdom as all evil will be subdued and defeated.
As usual it was a nice occasion drinking coffee and chatting about the week's events. As always is was nice to be there and well worth being there.
With next Sunday being Palm Sunday we thought about Jesus Christ riding into Jerusalem. The crowd shouted "Hosanna - LORD save". Little did they realise that Jesus would save us from our sins by dying on the cross.
Children's Talk: "Bless the Lord, O my soul". To bless God is includes thanking and praising him for his many gifts. We sang together "My God is so big, so strong and so mighty.
Morning Service: Christians have a strong and unbreakable relationship with God (he abides in us and we in him). We are given the Holy Spirit to assure us of this relationship and to be able to test all that we here so that we can be sure that it is the Good News about Jesus.
Click to listen to 1 John 3:24 - 4;6
Evening Service: The LORD calls Gideon to be the deliverer and saviour of his people who are suffering under Midianite oppression. This oppression is the result of the people forsaking the LORD. Gideon is is the least in his family and from a small clan and is not a willing volunteer but the LORD to makes him willing by assuring him of the LORD's power and presence.
Children's Talk: Mothering Sunday - we are not quite sure of the origin of Mothering Sunday but some think it was a day for people working away to visit their families and "mother" churches. In the Bible there are some amazing mothers, who served God in their time with great devotion e.g. Hannah, Ruth and Mary.
Morning Service: (1 John 3:19-23), The Christ-like love that Christians must have for each other is pleasing and on-going obedience to God. As they keep on trusting Jesus Christ and love others then Christians are able to re-assure themselves when their pwn hearts condemn them.
Evening Service: (Judges 5). The LORD has miraculously delivered his people from cruel oppressors, now the Israelites sing. They sing and:
Small number met up today but still plenty of tea, coffee and chat (with delicious homemade sausage rolls). In out Thought For The Day we considered how useless it is to try hiding anything from God. He knows all things, how we must be willing to confess and repent of our sins, trusting Jesus Christ.
Jesus Christ told the story of a lady losing a coin that was precious to her. She was delighted and happy when she found it. She told the good news to all of her friends. God is delighted and happy when we turn back to him and away from our sins
Morning Service: Isaiah 53;4-6
In the 8thh century BC Isaiah(god's faithful prophet) was given a detailed prophecy as to how the Messiah would suffer. The sufferings of the Messiah only make sense when we realise that he suffered for us. Jesus is penalised for our sins, as our substitute, as he dies on the cross
Evening Service: Judges 4
Israel again face the LORD's judgement because of their unfaithfulness to him and the covenant. The raises Deborah to lead the Israelites and another woman to bring about the final victory. The LORD's deliverance is unexpected and unlikely; and displays the LORD's wisdom, mercy and power.
