Residents in Maescanner Road were awoken around midnight on Saturday to discover the pavement outside Dafen Chippy covered with broken window-glass. The outer pane of a double glazed unit lay shattered on the floor, while the inner pane was left intact in the frame. Because of this the chip shop has been able to continue its business over the weekend relatively unimpeded.
The new windows had been installed last year as part of continuous improvements to the premises as the owners sought to invest in the shop. More recently however, structural defects at the rear of the building had caused the Chippy to receive a zero rating for hygeine from the Food Standards Agency. Improvement works have now been confirmed by the Council's head of Public Protection, and regular customers have been giving the Chippy a vote of confidence by keeping the shop busy. However, on Friday, the owners seemed to suggest on their Facebook fan-page that some customers have a more malicious agenda. They wrote: "We are as a DAFEN CHIPPY trying our best to make all the customer happy but sadly some times one or two we cant. There is no need for the threat or blackmail us to write things on Facebook or just eat page for a free food. Please be mindful about spams. Dafen chippy xxx" [sic]
The incident on Saturday has been another blow to the shop, as staff continue to provide a service and strive to earn a living. The perpetrators made an immediate getaway after the incident and police are continuing with their enquiries.
