Following a notice published in the Western Mail on Thursday, Plaid Cymru's Llanelli Constituency Committee rushed out urgent flyers to Dafen Residents warning that they were going to 'Lose Dafen Park'. The flyer stated the party's belief that the notice confirmed that the County Council's Labour/Independent coalition was going to sell the park, and called on the community to take action over 'this deplorable development'.
Yesterday, following angry concerns from the community, Carmarthenshire County Council's Head of Corporate Property, Jonathan Fearn responded to Dafen Village Website to clarify the situation, writing that "the notice refers to “disposal”, not sale, and the Act requires us to notify the public of disposals by lease as well as the freehold sale of land defined as “open space”. In the case of Dafen Park the Council plans to lease a small area of the park to a Dafen Cricket Club to facilitate the drawing down of grants to install cricket nets and improve the sporting facilities at the Park. There is no proposal to sell any part of the park." (More).
While members of the community were relieved at this news, some were dismayed over having received the flyer in the first place.
In defence of the flyer and its interpretation of the notice, Plaid Cymru Llanelli today issued this response:
