There has been strong speculation from political observers that Barrack Obama will this week make a stop at Dafen ahead of the NATO conference in Newport's Celtic Manor.
The diplomatic mission would be aimed at averting a wider conflict around the village as pro-Dafen rebels from Gorsfach vie to reunite Dafen South with Dafen North, years after being separated by the A4138 and Ward boundary changes. Many Gorsfach residents have rejected the idea of re-joining Dafen, preferring to maintain ties with Llwynhendy and Pemberton, and have accused Dafen Stores in the village of supporting Dafen South rebels by selling them newspapers and supplies. Anti-Dafen sentiment from neighbouring Bryn, Pemberton and Llwynhendy has seen tensions rise, with a growing number of volunteers enlisted to overpower the rebels and take the fight through the subway and into Dafen.
President Obama last week vowed to help find a diplomatic solution to the crisis, but has not ruled out military intervention after it emerged that the former Avon Inflatables building near Dafen Roundabout was being used to stockpile hundreds of boxes of cheap fireworks, which, experts say, would be used in a campaign of terror around the neighbourhood. A UN inspection of the site has uncovered a list of Dafen addresses where letterboxes and drainpipes could be targeted, and has discovered rockets standing in milk bottles, all aimed in the direction of Dafen Park.
Dafen Cricket Club will tell President Obama on his visit that they are ready for any such attacks, as they prepare an Iron Dome Defence System of hundreds of cricket balls which will be launched into the skies to intercept and destroy any incoming missiles. Meanwhile, staff at Prince Philip Hospital are preparing for high numbers of casualties by printing leaflets on how to get to A&E in Glangwilli.
Expectations for the visit are high. The Americans have a proven track record in resolving disputes in the area. When Swiss Valley encroached onto Felinfoel – by moving the Swiss Valley boundary sign down past the White Lion Inn on Millfield Road – fierce bickering raged for months until a diplomatic solution was found. Under guidance from the Americans, Swiss Valley was allowed to maintain control over the disputed area, and a memorial to the mill which gave Felinfoel its name was erected near the site as compensation. Since resolving the dispute, floral baskets are hung each year on both sides of Y Felin Millwheel to represent peace and cooperation between the two communities.
