A Dafen man has been confined to his house after being diagnosed with a severe case of Beer-bola.
The condition, linked to type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance, inflammatory diseases, and other obesity-related diseases, was first identified in Wales in the mid-1970s as 'beer belly', and spread across the world with travelling Welsh rugby fans. The beer belly/bola [Welsh], in which excessive visceral fat causes the abdomen to protrude, is often associated with a high alcohol intake.
In May 2014, a doctor treating patients at Llanelli's Prince Philip Hospital contracted Beer-bola and was flown back to Nigeria for treatment. But experts say the disease is unlikely to spread beyond westernised countries.
In this latest case, the unnamed Dafen man is said to be under strict orders by his wife to stay at home until he has effectively been cured. But compounding the sadness of this story is the fact that he has been isolated from his drinking buddies in the village. In response, they have pre-empted any similar action by their own wives by voluntarily quarantining themselves at Dafen Cricket Club for the weekend.
One of the wives of the men told us, “He texted me to say that it wasn't safe for him to come home and could not have contact with me until doctors rule out the possibility that he has been infected. He said they have all been banned from having visitors for the weekend while their health is monitored for early symptoms of Beer-bola, but could I post a hundred quid in an envelope in case he runs short of cash.”
