On Sunday 1st September Dafen entertained local rivals Llangennech in the final of the All Wales Sport Midweek Cup. The visitors had already secured the Midweek League title and were looking to complete the double.
Batting first the visitors were given a great start by openers Gareth George 19 (4x4) & Tom Carey 37 (3x4 & 2x6) and a big total looked on the cards. Once both openers were dismissed wickets fell at regular intervals but thanks to 20 from Richard Clement (2x4), 27 from Owain Phillips (1x4 & 1x6) and 10 from Nathan Lewis Llangennech posted a total of 131-8 from their 20 overs.
For Dafen Dafydd Nicholas took 3-21, Cieran Latham 1-16, Oliver Evans 2-25, Andrew Herbert 1-32 & Johnathan Griffiths 1-30.
At just over six and a half an over Dafen must have fancied their chances but Dafen were dealt an early blow when opener Jonathan Randell was dismissed for a duck and Jamie Mansel bowled for 7. Dafydd Nicholas 31 (5x4), and brothers Johnathan & Daniel Griffiths with 19 & 10 respectively helped get Dafen back on track.
With the run rate slowly creeping up Andrew Herbert chipped in with 32 from 28 balls (4x4 & 1x6) but once he was dismissed the Dafen innings lost momentum and they closed on 120-8 to give Llangennech an 11 run win. Gareth George took 3-17, Nathan Lewis 1-30, Owain Phillips 1-22, Tom Carey 1-26 and Aamir Ikram who began the season with Dafen took 1-22.
After the match Ellis Davies of All Wales Sport presented the League & Cup trophies to Tom Carey the Llangennech skipper. Victory will have taken some of the bitter taste from the mouths of the Llangennech players after they were relegated from division one of the South Wales Cricket Association.
