A Six-A-Side Cricket Tournament hosted by Dafen Welfare Cricket Club last Sunday raised £1,800 for charity. The event, which was organised in aid of #TeamDan, a fund-raising campaign in the name of ex-Scarlets player Dan Rogers, took place in front of a bumper crowd on a glorious day of Dafen sunshine after a worryingly wet Saturday.
Volunteers for the hosts appeared early on Sunday morning to prepare the ground for the big day, which saw teams competing from local rival clubs Llangennech, Llanelli, Felinfoel and Pwll. But the trophy went to a group better known for their exploits with a rugby ball – star attractions of the day, the Scarlets. The Scarlets impressed, with fine performances with both bat and ball, and were also a credit off the field.
#TeamDan was also represented in the tournament, with Dan Rogers' brother Steff, joined by another Scarlet, Phil John.
Scarlet's Steve Shingler, previously capped for Wales at age-grade cricket, won the leading batsman award for the tournament, while Steve Devonald, playing for tournament runners-up Pwll, was recognised as the Best Bowler. Dafen's Jonathan Griffiths was recognised as the tournament's Best All-Rounder.
There was fun for all the family from 11am on Sunday, with lasertag, bouncy castle, barbecue, music and more, and a great day was had by all. Many took to social networking sites to sing the praises of the event, and hoped that the organisers would be encouraged to make it a regular annual fixture, with the Scarlets defending the title next year.
The money raised has contributed to thousands of pounds already raised for The University of Wales Hospital, Cardiff's intensive care and haematology units, where Dan is undergoing treatment.
