Work to demolish a block of garages in Felinfoel has been delayed due to the presence of bats.
Carmarthenshire County Council’s housing and property services teams are working together to improve the appearance at the rear of the Maes Golau properties, and had planned to knock down several sub-standard garages that are no longer in use.
However, an ecological survey undertaken as part of the planning process has uncovered evidence of bats, a protected species by law, in at least two of the garages.
A full ecological survey will now be carried out, but cannot be undertaken until May at the earliest when bats are out of hibernation.
No demolition or remedial work can be undertaken until an ecological officer records findings and makes recommendations to mitigate the impact on bats.
Housing and property services teams are now communicating with tenants and private homeowners to inform them of developments and answer any questions they have.
Cllr Hazel Evans, Executive Board Member for Environment, said: “Bats are a protected species, and as such we cannot undertake any work at buildings where we have identified evidence of bat activity. We appreciate this will be frustrating, but we have to work within the law and in the interests of bat conservation.”
Cllr Linda Evans, Executive Board Member for Housing, said: “Our housing officers will keep in contact with tenants and private owners in this area to keep them informed and thank them for their patience and understanding.”
