February Litter Pick
Dafen pond - pond watch and litter pick. Monday was cold, windy and a bit drizzly but that did not deter myself and Veronica from meeting at the pond. An awful mess was waiting there for us yet again! We were made to feel good about what we were doing by a gentleman who came up to us to thank us for what we are doing for the village. Also we soon had 3 new volunteers turn up - 2 came from Burry Port and 1 from Swiss Valley. Thank you so much for your help and caring about my pond patch, i am very grateful. We had a really good couple of hours and collected 8 bags of litter plus other bits. The extra help allowed us to delve into areas we had not had time to do before! The pond life appear to be happy and content with the exception of a poor dead toad. There were many birds around whistling while we worked. lol.
January Litter Pick
Thank you Veronica for supporting me again this year at Dafen pond. The pond area was not too bad other than drink cans thrown into bushes again! The car park area however was a terrible mess. Some of the problem has been the strong winds blowing litter around but if people didn't dump their litter bags there in the first place then they wouldn't get opened by the wildlife and then blown around! Why people make the effort to take their rubbish there and not the tip or put it out at their own property is beyond my comprehension. It is so sad that people don't appreciate our beautiful areas and try to look after them, is it so hard to put a wrapper or can in a bin or pocket? Cigarette ends are also a big problem there. It is obvious that car ashtrays are being emptied onto the floor just a matter of feet away from the bin! You never know, one day it might just sink in to some people what bins are for lol.
December Litter Pick.
Thank you so much Veronica for your help on Monday. Veronica has helped me every litter pick all through the year, thank you so much. Only 3 other people have helped once each. I am disappointed that others don't help, i know some are working but by the amount of people we see it is obvious that there are people around! Anyway, Monday morning in the car park, all was not too bad. We made our way to the pond area and found that the lazy litter fairies have been at it again! A mattress, an exhaust, a fiber optic xmas tree, vase, wash up bowl were some of the things we came across. There were also bags of rubbish dumped in the trees near the entrance to Clos Cilsaig. We removed as much as we could and i have requested help from the council to move the mattress - who ever dumped it there should be ashamed of themselves! Please can everyone who likes to dump and litter the area make sure you dispose of your xmas litter properly and not leave it for us to pick up in the New Year.
Wishing everyone a Happy Christmas.
November Dafen Pond Litter Pick.
Well what can i say, nothing changes there as litter everywhere! Thank you yet again to Veronica, the only volunteer again (I know some people are working). Also thank you to the lady who offered to make us a cup of tea, it was very kind of you to think about us. Although i get disheartened with the amount of litter etc i feel happy when i have done it. I feel that the wildlife are a little safer (for a while at least) from the discarded fishing line, sharp tin lids, plastic etc. The swans enjoyed eating a bag of corn and followed us around the pond, please remember that bread is bad for them! How lovely the area is looking in all it's autumn colours
A big thank you to Veronica again for helping me to litter pick Dafen Pond area last week. We spent over 2 hours picking up litter and pulling fishing line out of the water/mud and grass! The first hour was spent in the car park picking up cigarette ends and litter that some lazy people had obviously emptied from their cars, just a matter of feet away from the bins! What hope to we have of teaching children to be respectful with their litter when we have adults that just don't care where they dump theirs!!! Maybe these people think that it is our job to pick up after them? It is not! I and anyone else that may help are doing it for the community and for the love and respect of the area/wildlife. I have a very busy life and have to make time to clean up the mess because i care, those litterers should be ashamed. Please, if anyone sees any littering going on, report it to the council. Also if you are not working and can help on our litter picking days, we will welcome your help. We are so lucky to have such a beautiful pond area.
August litter pick at Dafen Pond - You can tell it's the school holidays but unfortunately it's not just the kids throwing their litter!!! Sadly the worse kind of litter was found - syringes with needles!!! Please be aware of this and watch your children and animals don't come in contact with any. Veronica phoned the council to collect the needles which they did do thankfully. Veronica and Andrew volunteered to help me for which i thank you both very much. Below are pics of the offending litter collected and also some lovely pleasant pics taken by Veronica. Thank goodness we still have some fabulous wildlife there. Trixie x
Dafen Pond Litter Pick today:
It was a lovely morning at the pond today. The pond life was looking good with many babies to be seen. Butterflies and damselflies were also in abundance.
The pond area was actually not to bad litter wise, of course it could be improved. The car park and path way to the pond however was horrendous. Mc Donalds wrappings, crisp packets, sweet wrappers, pastie wrappers, cans and bottles etc. There are obviously some lazy people emptying their cigarette ends from their cars into heaps on the floor - bins within a few feet of where they park!!! A big thank you to Veronica again and also to a new volunteer, Kirsty for your help to clean up. It was also lovely today to have people walking by and thanking us for our efforts. It is so nice to know that we are appreciated by some people. We can but hope that the litterers will one day be appreciative of the lovely area and respect it and the wildlife.
Dafen Pond litter pick - Huge thanks to Veronica for your help. It might not look much that was picked up but it took Veronica and myself 2 and a half hours! Most likely due to the wind, we picked up an awful lot from the edges of the pond and in certain undergrowth areas. We also spent a good amount of time pulling up dis-guarded fishing line from the mud, water, bushes etc. Please, please, if you go fishing, have respect for the wildlife. There are many wildlife babies around which is such good news, it would be so sad for any to be injured/killed due to uncaring humans! We may not have got all the litter danger away (some we just can not reach or get to) but the good feeling inside of us that we may have saved unnecessary injury to wildlife is what spurs us on. Maybe some of you people out there could help us to take pride in the area and try to keep the wildlife safe next month when we litter pick (obviously work, commitments, etc dependent).
Dafen pond watch and litter pick. A big thank you to Jo and Veronica again for helping me today, again no one else turned up to help! On the whole the area was not as bad as it has been with general dropped litter but there is still more improvement needed. Fly tipping is still a big issue, we found 2 black bags of rubbish hidden amongst the trees by the Clos Ciilsaig entrance. Surely it would be less effort to just put it out for the bin men!
WARNING: we came across a water filled deep, large manhole with half it's cover missing leaving enough room for a child or dog to be able to fall in!!! I have reported it and have been assured that it will be sorted this week. It is located between the car park and the pond area so please watch your children and dogs. I am happy to say that the pond wildlife appear to be happy and a swan seems content sitting on a nest. Trixie x
Dafen pond today has the first beautiful signs of spring popping up BUT sadly the litter and dumping of rubbish continues.
Do you know who is regularly dumping rubbish at the pond by the entrance to the park? Please report it if you do. Many thanks to Veronica, Jo and Phillip who volunteered to help me clean today. They came from Pwll, Morfa and town to help, sadly no one from Dafen other than myself. We spent 2 and a half hours picking up litter from the area that actually has bins, 3 by the pond and 1 + bottle banks in the car park! Do the litter louts really find it that hard to use a bin! So angry as there just is no excuse for this.
