Dafen Forum held its 10th Christmas Fair last Friday, with yet another fantastic fireworks display by award winning pyrotechnists Pendragon, a snow machine, and a visit from Disney Frozen's Elsa and Olaf; as well as Beauty and the Beast and comic book heroes Captain America and Batman.
By the time the performers, families and dignitaries reached the entertainment marquee, the weather had begun to clear and a full moon beamed down upon the Park. The primary school choirs from Dafen C.P., Halfway C.P., and St. Mary's R.C., were outstanding as usual, and made the village proud.
At the end of the performances, Captain America turned a snow machine upon the excited children and the crowd. Afterwards the costume characters made the children balloon-models, and posed for photographs.
At this year's School Arts and Crafts Competition, the winners, judged by photographer Joyce Mollet A.R.P.S., were:
Reception class to age 6 :– 1st. Charlie Williams (St. Mary's); 2nd. Oliver Ryan (Halfway); 3rd. Ava Ellerton (St Mary's).
Years 4 – 6: 1st. Ancara Drew (Halfway); 2nd. Ella Kavanagh (St. Mary's); 3rd. Shakira May (Dafen).
Comprehensive: 1st. Coral Thomas; 2nd. Daria Baranska; 3rd Abbie Harries (all St. John Lloyd).
Each received a trophy for their winning entries. The winners and runners up also received individual letters from Nia Griffith MP congratulating them on their work, and the pictures will be put up on display in Llanelly House until Christmas. Congratulations to the winners, and to all the school children who entered for another fantastic effort.
Finally, the weather was perfect for our annual fireworks display, which was as spectacular as ever.
Dafen Forum would like to thank all those that helped us make this year's carnival possible.
We also thank George Linsey Funfair and Crazy Crepes for their continued support, no matter what the weather, and Dafen Church for allowing us to use the church hall grounds.
Finally we must thank all those who came out to support the event and all the volunteers who have given up their time to make it a success, as well as our stall holders, schools, local P.S.O.'s, and St John's Ambulance. Dafen Forum are pleased to announce that a Christmas Fair and Fireworks Display is being organised for Friday, 27 November.
This will be the tenth year that volunteers from the Forum, with the help of community groups, schools, businesses and organisations, bring the community together for seasonal celebrations at Dafen Park. We look forward to seeing you all there.
Interested parties wishing to find out how to become part of the event are invited to get in touch by completing the contact form below. Expressions of interest are also invited for a limited number of table-top stalls in the Community Hall, (£10 per table).
Two community noticeboards in Dafen have been repaired after being smashed by vandals.
The noticeboards are among six situated around Dafen, (including ones on lower Capel Road, Bryn Elli, Dafen Road - opposite Owens, and one opposite Dafen post office), used to promote services and events around the village.
A notice board on the top of Capel Road (near the old quarry) and another on Bryngwyn Road (near Dafen School) have been in a state of disrepair for quite some time after damage to the windows. Volunteers from Dafen Forum carried out the repairs at the weekend, and money raised by the Forum will pay for materials.
Dafen Christmas Fair was another great success this year thanks to the many dedicated volunteers, supporters, and local businesses and organisations who help to make it happen.
The event, which Dafen Forum has been organising annually over the last 8 years, costs around £4,500 to put into action and wouldn't be possible without the help of local businesses and fundraisers. Their contributions make it possible for us to hold a worthwhile event to bring the community together, with families paying just a nominal fee for entry into the Fair which includes a fantastic fireworks display by award winning pyrotechnicians Pendragon.
We would like to say a special thank you to Barclays Bank, Parker Plant Hire and Dyfed Steels for their support this year and also to Llanelli Rural Council for awarding us a Community Grant towards the provision of our Christmas tree and public liability insurance.
The dry, mild weather played its part in the success of this years Fair, providing comfortable conditions to enjoy the outdoor entertainment. The funfair managed by G. Linsey was as popular as ever and a bumper crowd watched the schools' choirs perform in the Marquee, followed by an energetic display by Dafen Dance Club.
Crazie Crepes, hotdogs and burgers were available for sale at the fair, as well as refreshments in the Community Hall where children were able to visit Santa in his Grotto and parents were able to shop at the stalls.
Llanelli Town Mayor Roger Price and Mayoress Ruth Price visited the Community Hall to award prizes for the schools arts and crafts competition which was judged earlier in the week with the help of Rev. Canon Huw Mosford of the combined Parish of Dafen and Felinfoel.
This years winners were :
Finally, Wales' premier display company Pendragon set off the much anticipated and impressive fireworks show before a disco was held at the Cricket Club to round off the festive celebration.
Dafen Forum would like to thank all those who made this years event a success and look forward to your support in 2015.
Have a Merry Christmas
